Solid State "Hard" Drives (SSD) use flash memory to create a storage medium with no moving parts, and virtually no latency in accessing data and depending on the use SSDs can be much faster than even the fastest hard drives. SSD devices are shockproof (good for portable machines and industrial uses), and in some cases can reduce power consumption and heat generation. SSDs are packaged as conventional 2.5" (laptop) SATA drives, and as ExpressCard slot cards and in 1.8" and smaller formats for netbooks and portable devices. Adaptors to fit the 3.5" drive form factor are available.
SSD drives are constructed differently than the flash memory on USB memory sticks, Compact Flash and SD cards. One characteristic of flash memory is that while it is quite good at reading memory, it is poor at writing changes to individual memory locations. Additionally, flash memory chips have a finite number of times that they can be re-written, they will wear out and fail after a certain number of uses. This generally isn't a problem for a camera memory card, but it's a big problem for a computer hard drive, where temporary files are created and rewritten thousands of times per hour.
SSD devices use advanced techniques to manage memory writes and 'load level' or balance the usage across all the memory locations to get higher speed and longer life. Newer SSD drives support TRIM commands and/or come with 'garbage collection' utilities to optimize the allocation of data in the cells after the drive has been used for some time. The use of TRIM commands depends on operating system support.
